Pine nuts are the seeds that grow on pine trees, specifically on a hard, inedible nut casing. They are one of the more expensive nuts because of the time required to grow them and the effort to harvest the seeds from their protective encasement. As for the shape, they are small, elongated ivory-coloured seeds measuring about 1/2 inch long. They have a soft texture and a buttery flavour. They are often lightly toasted to add a little crunch. They make a great added value to many savoury dishes and are also a great salad or hummus topper. In addition, they can be used in desserts and cookies.
